Indian Women and Jewelry

Like any other thing, jewelry is the necessity of Indian women .Indian ornaments is simply decorative and seductive. It epitomizes the ideal beauty of women. An ornament not only serves to please the eyes of the beholder but also fulfils an auspicious purpose. In old days women use to do "SOLAN SINGAR (sixteen ornaments) covering head to toe with different ornaments.

1: tika (a chain with a hook): used exact in the centre of head.

2: Sindoor (vermillion): red colored powder used by married gals; it’s applied in the partition between hair in the centre above the forehead. It’s the symbol of married women

3: Bindi: it’s a dot applied on forehead between eyes.

4: Kajal (eye liner): apply on eye lids, makes eyes more attractive .

5: Nath, Koka (nose ring): It is a small ornament used on a pierced nose that makes her looks more seductive.

6: Haar (necklace): wear in neck and they just distract the eyes of viewer

7: Karan Phool & Jhumke (ear rings ): are decorative and expensive ornaments wear in a bored ear lobe, they could be very elaborate, glittering with gold and gems.

8: Henna (Mehndi): its a paste made up of henna leaves and applied on hands , the color can last for 3 or 4 weeks.

9: Bangles /wrist ornaments: bangles are one of the oldest ornament wear by Indian women: Bangle can be made up of silver, gold, platinum, glass or any hard metal.

10: Baaju band (armbands): its wears on the upper arm, between shoulder joint and elbow.

11: Mundari /Arsi (finger rings): small circular ornaments wear in fingers, highly decorative a designed. Arsi is a thumb ring wear in old days. This is a special ring with a round format has set in its center a small, usually round but sometimes heart-shaped mirror.

12: Kesha Pasharachna(hair style) :Hair is a source of vital strength and magic power.

13: Kamar Band (waist belt/ornament): it’s an ornament that binds the waist.

14: Payal (anklet): it’s a chain like ornaments with or without small bells or decoration, wear on ankles.

15: Bicchu (toe rings): its same as finger rings but smaller in size , with different designs and decoration, toes look real elegant and attractive .

By Blogger tulipspeaks, at 9/19/2005 02:36:00 PM

  • Hi
yes Keshi..amutha agrees with me......so i am not wrong then....
I dont know why men dont wear them...but i think...bcos women has taken that tradition as well from poor men...LOL

    The reason behind is...
Girls Wear thalli and kungkumam ontheir forehead-- As men walk keeping their head up when they see a girl...they will see thier kunggumam and thali so they know that this is a married girl.....

    Boys wearing a Toe Ring--
Girls walking with their head looking down will see the toe ring in boy's toe...and knows this boy is married....

sorry St000niw///for using ur space to talk to amutha and keshi...
poor girls dont know the tradition just kidding
